I'll be honest. My relationship with Rackspace is truely a love / hate one at best. Sure they've continued to errode at the core foundation of what was once and revolutionay product, Mosso. However, I understand why, Mosso was a bit unstable at times and what good is a system if it's not reliable? I'd like to see some feature brought back, but it doesn't mean I have to sit and wait.
We've developed some work arounds, in the coming weeks / months / millena we'll share our tricks for making the rackspace cloud work for us.
Archiving sites and extracting archives on the Rackspace Cloud
We've developed a script for archiving everything in a cloud site, then storing that zip in the parent directory, so it's not web accessible.
You'll also want to extract CMS installs in the same way I'd imagine. This saves us a good 30 - 40 minutes. While I'd like to say we came up with this as well, I cant. this unzip php script was created by Alex at http://www.learncpp.com .
With these two scripts we can save anywhere from 30 - 90 minutes for each site roll out.
